There is something nice about catching up with a comic series. It is nice to get your weekly “fix”, go home and read what came out that week instead of putting it aside because you are still 40 issues behind or something like that.
Over the weekend I got caught up on “The Walking Dead” series. It felt great to get caught up on the story line. I look forward to issue #66 so I can read it right away. The troubling thing is now I have to wait. When you are burning through trade paperbacks or back issues, there are no real “cliff hangers”. You just move onto the next, unless it is late, or your break is up. You get into this grove and rhythm of this story for 65 issues and now you wait. No more chain reading, no more peeking to see if they made it, nothing. Same thing happened with me for Green Lantern and Captain America. Feels great to get all caught up, but now you have to wait to continue the story.
Maybe it is the first born in me that likes Shakespeare type endings were everything is wrapped up in the final few minutes or I am just plan impatient.
I remember when I was a kid and TV shows would do the famous “To Be Continued”. As I got older I would watch the clock and start to slowly realize “there is no way they can wrap this up in 4 minutes” and then those three words would pop up. GRRRRRRR.
My wife had the same experience when we went to see the first LOTR. At the time we had not read the books and had very little knowledge about the whole story line. When the end credits started to role and she looked at me and said “but it is not done!” She was not happy when she was informed that this was going to be a trilogy.
Fortunately, comics do a lot of “story arcs” so I can put a series aside until the 5 issue run is done and then read it in one sitting. Only a few do that so I guess I will have to adapt and learn to have more patient when it comes to silly things like “comic book cliff hangers”.
